Biography

Birth & family

Ramón Edward De Bertodano (y López) was born in Dec 1847 in Stoke in Surrey, England. He was the son of Román Ramón Xavier de Bertodano y López, 5th Marqués del Moral and Henrietta Pattison. In 1851 he and his family were residing in Charlton just west of Sunbury-on-Thames in Middlesex.[1] The family consisted of Ramón (aged 50 years, head, gentleman), Henrietta (35 years his wife), and their nine children (Hannah Louise (10), Ellen (9), Gertrude (8), Henrietta I (5), Baldomero (6),James (4), Ramón (3), Louise (2) and Alice (6 mo.)) and nine servants. The younger children were baptized privately in St Mary, Sunbury on Thames.

Emigration to Australia & first marriage

Ramón is conjectured to have emigrated to the Colony of New South Wales about 1870. Sources for this has not been identified.

He acquired about 800 acres of land on the eastern shore of the North Arm of the Richmond River (later to be called Wilson River) 3 miles south of the township of Lismore and adjacent to his future father-in-law, William Wilson's property of Monaltrie. He commenced a stud farm there named Koolool, on which he grew introduced grasses and commenced to breed thorough-bred race horses, farm horses and pigs[2]. Ramón was to sell the property on 25 Feb 1886[3]. His stock was highly prized and had outstanding blood lines which he had brought in from England. This valuable stock was retained in the Northern Rivers area[4]

Ramón, aged 23 years, married Mary Jane Brand Wilson, aged 29 years, youngest daughter of William Wilson (the settling founder of Lismore, NSW) on 28 Jul 1870[5]

Mary and Ramón had four known children all born in the Northern Rivers area of NSW in the space of 4 years:

  1. Frederick Ramon, born 19 May 1871 at Koolool[6][7].
  2. Henry O'Brien Stratford, born 30 Jul 1872 in Grafton[8][9]
  3. William Cruden, born 24 Oct 1873 in Koolool[10][11]
  4. Nina Ogilvie, born 27 Aug 1875 in Koolool[12][13].

Mary had her last children, Nina, when aged 34 years. Nina would have been aged 6 years when Mary, died on 18 Mar 1882 (her birthday) at Koolool[14][15]

Ramón maintained an interest in horse-racing after Koolool was sold in 1886, He left racing in 1889 after a betting case involving a horse named Marvel[16] in consequence of which the horse was barred from racing and Ramón barred off the turf initially for life. He would shortly leave Australia and settle in the USA.

Second marriage & emigration to USA

Ramón married Muriel Minnie Abercronbie, his second wife on 28 Feb 1890. Muriel was aged 19 years and Ramón was aged 52 years, a difference of about 23 years[17]. Muriel was the 4th daughter of Robert Abercombie Esq. grazier of Gunyerwaraldi, near Warialda.

In 1891 Ramón emigrated to the USA with Muriel. He and Muriel became naturalised aliens. Ramón continued to make his residence in the US, in California, in various locations around San Francisco until his death in 1931.

He travelled at some point around 1894 to Australia and engaged his brother-in-law, Jack Abercrombie to bring out some race horses and greyhounds to California. He continued his interest in racing horses and Jack maintained the horses on Ramón's ranch named Merriwa Ranch or Merriwa Stock Farm, in Pleasanton, Alameda County.[16][18]

Ramón and Muriel made their home in California and in the 1900 Census, Muriel was aged 28, reported that she had had two children both of whom were still living. These children have not been identified. Ramón and Muriel were living in Murray township, Alameda County, California, Ramón was recorded as a farmer aged 53, having been born in Dec 1847, and been in the US for 9 years as a naturalised alien, Ramón's son, William aged 26 years (born Oct 1873), a farm labourer was living with them. He had been in the US for 6 years having arrived in 1894[19]

On 29 Apr 1913 he was in London for the marriage of his son, Henry O'Brien Stratford de Bertodano (by then aged 40 years and an architect) to Emilie Stewart Watson. A number of the de Bertodanos were witnesses: Henrietta, Baldomero and Frederick, and Ida[20]. He and Muriel returned to the US through Ellis Island, New York on the SS Aquitania out of Liverpool on 20 Jun 1914. He was aged 66 years, his last permanent residence was Berkley, San Francisco, California. His occupation was recorded as "miner" and his nearest relative in England was his brother B. de Bertodano of 22 Chester Terrace, Regents Park, London. He was a non-immigrant suggesting that he had residency status in the US.[21]

In 1920, he and Muriel were living at 53 Madrone Avenue, San Rafael, Marin County, San Francisco. In the Census that year, he was recorded as aged 70 years, a retired "capitalist" living with his wife Muriel, aged 42 years, Muriel's nephew Jack Abercombie, aged 13 years (son of Sloper "Jack" Abrecrombie and his wife (Ramón's daughter) Nina) and a boarder, William Johnstone, aged 60 and born in Ireland[22]

He was again out of the USA in the late summer of 1926. He returned to San Francisco, USA on 19 Feb 1927, aged 79 years 2 months, on the SS Loch Katrine which sailed from Cristobal, Panama.[23] He gave as his contact in England H.S. de Bertodano (probably his son Henry Stratford) in Waltham-on-Thames. He had left the US six months previously on 18 Aug 1926 (Return Permit no. 189618).

In 1930 Ramón, aged 82 years and Muriel, aged 58 years were living in Park Road, Fairfax, Marin County (about 6 miles from their home in 1920 in San Rafael).[24] Their boarder William Johnstone was still with them.

Death

Rámon, aged 83 years died on 7 Jan 1931 at his home in Fairfax, Marin County, California.[25]

Probate on his will was granted on 6 Aug 1931 in London to Marmaduke Capper Matthews.[26] His effects in England were valued at £331. Ramón's sister, Alice of 22 Chester Terrace, Regents Park, London, as sister, died in the same year on 8 Apr. Marmaduke Matthews also actted as her solicitor.

Ramón's cremated remains are conjectured to have been buried in Kansal Green Cemetery on 7 Jul 1932.[27] Other members of his family are interred there, his brother Baldomero, and his son Henry Stratford de Bertodano[28]
